With the evenings closing in and the shortening of the days it is easy to get sucked in to the mindset of taking short cuts with training and not looking after your nutrition as it is more convenient to reach for “comfort foods” rather than the making healthy choices.
Set Yourself A Goal To Work Towards
This sounds obvious but it is always easier to have a goal to aim for during the summer when going on holidays or wanting to fit into a dress or swimsuit etc.
Make a goal for this winter be it increasing your strength, losing body fat or increasing your fitness level for an event coming up in the new year. Give yourself something to focus on with regards to your training.
Stay Consistent
Consistency is key when it comes to training and achieving a healthy lifestyle.
Set yourself a schedule for training and stick with it as much as possible.
With the colder weather evenings setting in getting to the gym on a regular basis will be very important for both your mental and physical health.
The same goes with food, try and stay away from eating “comfort foods” on a regular basis because the temperature has dropped a little.
If anything your body with require more vitamins and minerals from your food at this time of year to fight off things like a cold or flu.
If your work is mainly indoors then try and get some Vitamin D supplements to make up for the lack of sunshine you will see on a daily basis.
Don’t Be Too Hard On Yourself
You will most likely be having a few more social outings coming into winter. Things like Christmas parties or friends and family coming home will most likely mean a few nights out having a few drinks and eating outside of your normal routine.
Enjoy this but don’t allow it take over your life completely. Try and get yourself back on track right away rather than letting a night out snowball in to a week away from the gym and eating whatever you like.
Schedule a walk or a light training session a day or 2 after these nights out to get back to where you want to be.
Remember to enjoy the process of training, eating right and looking after your physical and mental health this winter as this will stand to you in the long run coming into the new year.
