Steve’s Note: Mikal has really committed to his program and as a result has got massive benefits. His main need was to supplement his rugby with more mobility and strength. He has done this in the most pleasant manner. Mikal comes in and does exactly what he has to do each time. He is now injury free and even thinking of extending his rugby playing days longer than he expected due to the massive benefits he is getting from his training. Mikal is also a very active member of the gym, attending the monthly workshops. Without a doubt he is a fully deserving client of the month.
I initially joined Steve McGrath Health and Performance to supplement my pre-season training for rugby. I wanted to build up core strength and work on trouble areas such as my lower back and shoulders. I found that along with keeping a general level of fitness, it allowed me to hit the ground running for the new season. I find I now maintain the general strength that I have built up in the gym to support my match day performance.
I felt I was in good shape with respect to lifestyle, energy and strength. I was not that focused on nutrition and had various muscular pains and issues resulting from the wear and tear of playing rugby. I had been through several consecutive seasons of long term injuries that were affecting my overall fitness/performance and recovery.
With this program built specifically for me around my sport I have:
- Increased my strength for Rugby along with my geberal day-to-day strength.
- Strengthened my once weak areas such as torn ankle ligaments & torn shoulder muscles.
- I am now injury free for the first time in many years playing rugby.
I have started to experiment with the recipes and templates provided and I can feel the benefits re energy levels immediately. It was never that much of an issue before, however I am now at the stage where I can definitely feel the difference in training from when I have eaten right vs. when I have not and the impact that has on training is massive. Heading to the gym is also a great stress buster after a day’s work!
Between the music, the attitude of the trainers and the attitude of the other people training, there is a very positive atmosphere in the gym. This atmosphere is great for when you are training really hard as everyone encourages you. This atmosphere ensures that it is not a chore to go training, but rather something to look forward to each day.
Between the program that is provided to me, the gym location (very central) and the high standard gym equipment, I feel that I have everything I need to become better at my sport. It is great to have a program fitted to me and for me not to have to worry about what exercise I should be doing etc. I just take the program and work away each session and the coaches are always on hand to offer tips, instruction and motivation.
I have a high trust level with all the coaches. They know what I want and need from my training sessions and can deliver specific programs for me that are both effective and enjoyable. They took (and still take the time even though I train on my own) with me to build up my foundations re correct technique, which is allowing me to push on and work harder to get better results.

The facilities, coaches and general atmosphere are all geared towards your success. However, just as any other gym, it is still up to you to commit to your goals and put the work in to achieve results but these guys make it a whole lot easier!
