It’s another beautiful morning and the start of what could potentially be a great week. That is, if you put in the effort to make it great.
We’ll get the doom and gloom out of the way early on and send our commiserations out to the nation as the Irish football team make their exit from the Euro’s. Unfortunately it wasn’t to be the payback that we all hoped for but there’ll be plenty more opportunities in the future.
With that done, I want to talk about a few of the many benefits of strongman training which we are huge fans of here in our facility. And it’s not just the coaches who love it, Cinets also have a bit of a love hate relationship with it.
We are kicking off our Mens 8 Week Summer Strongman program next Monday 4th July (you can check out all the details of it here) and here are 4 reasons why it could be exactly what you need.
- It’s one of the most enjoyable ways to train
As adults who have a lot of responsibilities and demands on our time, exercise often gets dropped to the bottom of our priority list. Only problem with this is that exercise is one of the most important non-negotiable in life and simply has to be done if you want to enjoy a high quality life.
Making exercise fun should be one of the main priorities in your program so that you actually enjoy it and it doesn’t become a chore.
Flipping tyres, dragging sleds, swinging sledgehammers and smashing ropes into the ground can be so much fun that it’s not uncommon to forget you’re actually exercising. Add to the mix a group of guys (we’ll get to the ladies next month) who are all supporting and driving each other on and it’s just like being in the pub (without the scourges, pints, salted peanuts and non-sensical talk).
It’s also so far removed from the regular training that most people do that the novelty alone will make you excited to give it a blast.
2. It’s one of the best ways to burn fat
While it’s a ton of fun it’s not easy (which is one of the main reasons it’s so fun!). You get your heart rate up and challenge your muscles in ways you haven’t done before. This combination serves as one of the best ways to strip fat from your body. In fact, when our clients have a serious fat-loss goal, strongman training is always found somewhere in their programming.
3. It builds both mental and physical toughness
Not too long ago mens roles included building houses by hand, working the land, hunting, competing in physically demanding sporting events, defending their villages and tribes and many other forms of physical labour.
The majority of roles for todays man includes sitting down at a computer, slouching behind a desk or wheel, talking on the phone or staring at tv. Most men watch sporting events instead or taking part in them. Hunting, working the land and fending off enemies are obsolete for most men.
The down side to all this is that these activities were our in built health and fitness activities. Removing them has also removed our daily dose of fitness with massive negative consequences as a result. Removing physically demanding tasks also has the knock-on effect of making people mentally weaker and softer.
Physical fitness and mental fitness are inseparable.
Strongman training bridges the gap because you simply because it strengthens your body and teaches you to toughen up mentally along the way.
4. It’s fairly easy to learn
Of course there is technique involved in it but many of the exercises can be learned pretty easily. Loading up a sled and dragging 3o metres is physically challenging but it can be learned in a few seconds.
Likewise, the farmers walk picture above involves picking up 2 weights and walking with them. Easy enough to learn but it can be made as easy or challenging as possible by increasing the weight or distance walked.
Final thoughts
Not every training facility caters for strongman training but if yours does then I’d highly recommend you give it a go for the benefits mentioned above or just to add in some variety to your training.
