In a blog a while back I talked about how Ireland is getting fatter and unhealthier year after year and that it is predicted we will be one of the fattest and unhealthiest nations in Europe within a few years.
One of the biggest contributing factors to this that I would see with the people I work with is the huge amounts of alcohol and alcohol-fuelled events that people have built into their lives.
It’s not uncommon for me to work with clients who are downing 30+ pints a week!!
There are many problems associated with this including the calories that are contained within the drink, the junk food that usually goes hand-in-hand with it and the lack of drive to get off the couch due to the body being under so much pressure, to name just a few.
And when it comes to getting fit and healthy, dropping the junk weight, etc. a lot of people simply need to wake up, cop on and act like responsible adults.
I’ve recently had 2 clients who fell into this category- over 30 pints a week each. Obviously they felt and looked like shit and the weight was piling on. Quality of life was pretty bad in their own words.
They couldn’t walk without being under pressure, they were on multiple medications for conditions directly related to their lifestyle choices, looked puffed, bloated and under terrible strain and all that kind of nasty stuff.
And the backbone of all these problems was alcohol. It had just crept into their lives and become a huge focal point for them.
Fast forward and:
- one client has dropped 25kg+ of fat while the other has halved in size
- Both have removed medications from their lives
- One can now run for 30 minutes when before he struggled to walk in general without getting caught for breath
- Skin conditions have cleared up massively
- Their physiques have completely re-shaped
- Their confidence has trippled
- Their happier, more energetic, fitter and healthier than they have ever been
And they also have a much better relationship with alcohol. The huge amounts they would consume every week has been replaced by enjoying a few drinks on special occasions and their quality of life has skyrocketed- better relationships and life-experiences that before would have been held back by the amount of alcohol (and crappy lifestyles) they were drinking.
Take home golden nugget of knowledge
You need to understand that this is a deal breaker. Obviously there is nothing wrong with a few drinks to celebtate an occasion or when you meet up with a few friends and that kind of thing but if your days are based around excessive alcohol then you can forget about ever getting fit and healthy.
This is a huge task for many people who say they want to enjoy a better quality of life but unfortunately many never do it.
Don’t be one of them. Man/Woman up, take responsibility for your health, get educated and do what needs to be done. It’s not easy but so what. You still need to do it!
P.s. I’m not talking about alcoholics in this post. That’s not my area of expertise so not trying to advise on how to go about dealing with those issues.
